Description: VINTAGE HAMMOND INDIANA POLICE SGT JACKET w/ LONG SLEEVE SHIRT. Jacket is named on Left inside pocket lining to "JACK ARNDT." There are no size markings inside the jacket, but it feels like size 38 or 39. The larger 1" diameter buttons (4) have been removed from the main jacket fly; three (3) were saved and are included w/ jacket (see photo). The smaller 5/8" buttons are safety-pinned onto both jacket pockets and secured by plastic retainer to Right epaulet. The Left epaulet button has come off, but is safety-pinned under the Left chest pocket flap. All of the jacket buttons read, "HAMMOND POLICE." The bottom of the jacket fly was designed to secure by small snaps; one is remaining w/ both male & female portions snapped together. I do not find any moth holes or other damage in this jacket, except for minor wear to the edges of inner pocket throats. There is a channel at the bottom of the jacket to accommodate a 2" wide duty belt externally. The jacket is accompanied by a dark blue long sleeve polyester shirt (size 14 1/2 x 33") which bears a winged wheel w/ gold-yellow arrow pointing forward above the sergeant stripes. The small gold buttons on the shirt fly and pockets are all marked with "P" enclosed in a wreath, but the shirt fly is secured by zipper; the cuff buttons are plastic. This shirt may have been worn for an off-duty or post-retirement job; I believe a Police uniform shirt would still have the Hammond Police Left shoulder patch, but this may not have been the practice during the era Mr. Arndt served (probably mid-1950s to mid-1970s-80s. The winged wheel suggests Motorcycle or Traffic. As to the original owner ID, it is hard to be certain with just a first and last name, but the most likely original owner is Jack W Arndt, who was born in 1929 and died in 2001 at age 72; his obituary published in South Bend Tribune 7/28/2001 mentions neither police nor military service, but his "Find a Grave" page has a Korean War Veteran mention, and I recall finding indication of Korean War service in US Navy on Fold3. I was unable to confirm whether he was a Navy diver, but the right shoulder patch on the jacket indicates that he was a member of Hammond PD Dive Team.
