Description: Vintage Edouard Halouze French Fine Gouache Pochoir on Paper Stencil Signed Edouard Halouze – Fine Gouache Pochoir on paper, withartist's stenciled signature lower left. 10 x 12 in. (sheet), unframed. Edouard Halouze, French painter, illustrator anddecorator. born in 1895. He died in 1958 This is the finest Halouze pochoir we’ve handled. Itsdelicate matte surface is profoundly different from the wonderful shiny, ragingcolors of his famed Russian Folklore Dance Series. It’s in great condition. There’s only a tiny bit of edge darkening from having been framed for almost ahundred years. We have wondered if this might have been an illustration for The Mikado’s Wandering Minstrel. Simply stated, pochoir is the French wordfor stencil. In the 1920’s and 30’s Art Deco era, the color application process of the stencil was rejuvenated by the French, bringingcolor illustration processes for books and prints to new glorious heights. Thisinterest in exploring the stencil process came in reaction to the proliferationof machine printing and the poor quality of color reproductions inpublishing. With pochoir printing, the hand application of layers ofpigment created dazzling effects that the camera or printing press could neverreplicate. The art of pochoir (French for stencil) is a highlyrefined technique involving gouache paints and stencils to create or add colorto prints. The process consists of creating the stencil and applying the paintin a tapping motion, creating a unique effect. Earlier stencil works, typically used for decorative surface ornament were quite primitive, withapplied color areas outlined by the supporting cutout framework. Newexperimental techniques in pochoir refined the process using multiple layers ofcolor applications for a single print. Pochoir printing wasalso easily combined with images made by lithography, woodcut, wood engraving, line drawings, or etchings, thus turning a decorative technique into fineart.
