Description: Vintage Dead Blow Basa Hammer Greene, Tweed & Co. No. 4, 13"New York 13" Total Length x 5" Head These types of refractory hammers were developed in 1933 for use in the installation and demolition of coke ovens. To my knowledge, the No. 4 is the largest in this line of hammers. It is referred to as a "split head" hammer because the steel housing is in two parts and striking replacements are available in pairs, one nylon and one leather. It was a common hammer in the 1930s and 1940s and was often used in other applicaitons.
