Description: James M. Cain was an American novelist, journalist, and screenwriter. He is best remembered as the author of The Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity, and Mildred Pierce which were all adapted into highly regarded films. Cain's SINFUL WOMAN was originally published in 1947 as the first number in the AVON MONTHLY NOVEL series, with a great Barye Phillips cover. This is the 1948 reprint edition, also published by Avon. The terrific good girl art cover is by Raymond Johnson, a pioneer of the style in paperbacks who helped define the Avon look of the 1940s and early 1950s. In addition to paperback covers, Johnson painted many illustrations for the men's adventure magazines as well as cartoon animation, newspaper, and advertising art during his career. Unfortunately, much of Johnson's work was unsigned or uncredited in its original publication. Cain's novel concerns a recently divorced Hollywood actress who moves to Reno. Unfortunately, her former spouse is found dead and the starlet comes under suspicion. The first of three original paperback novels that Cain wrote for Avon, Sinful Woman was the most commercially successful. This is a VG+ to near fine copy of the 1948 edition with minor bumps & scratches to the front cover, a little lean to the spine, no noticeable defects to the back cover. The interior paper is yellowing.
