CORNING WARE was launched in 1959 - a wide array of items and patterns were available over the years. Significant changes in design came in 1972 and a complete re-work of products came after World Kitchen Inc took ownership after 2000.Offered here is a - Vintage to possibly Retro CORNING*Ware - 6 1/2" P-Series, Menuette/Duette Line, Skillet - in the All-White Pattern in Most-Excellent, barely-used condition (look unused). The Skillet is made of Stove-Top and Oven Safe Pyroceramic Glass, tinted white. All glass surfaces are super highly-glossy, shiny, and clean. There are no obvious chips, cracks, nor flea-bites; no hazing, stains, significant rubs nor scratches - minimal fine rubs, scratches, and incidental contact marks - a little marking along the bac of the handle likely due to stacking. The form of this Skillet is - round at the upper edge, with the strong and sturdy handle reaching out at one side - robust & with material supporting from beneath, tapering & flattening towards the rounded end. The Skillet tapers inwards slightly from the top edge towards the flat base - the center-base is slightly recessed. This Skillet is prone embossed on the base with the manufacturer's information - ".. .....; CORNING WARE "circled R"; P-83-B 16cm"; two prone dots at the center - often found on CORNING items. P-Series items were available from ~1962-71 and are stovetop and oven safe. This Skillet measures - ~ 6 3/4-7/8" across the top edge, in diameter; 10 1/4 - 3/8" across the top edge to the end of the handle; 5 1/8-1/4" in diameter, across the base seat rim; 1 3/4" in height.SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION –CORNING Inc (est 1851) - Corning is known world-wide for their Corning*Ware, Corelle, PYREX products. Three main categories of PYREX are recognized: CLEAR (from 1915 ...); Flame-ware (1936-79); and Coloured (Clear & Milk Glass 1947 ...).CORNING*WARE - The CORNING*WARE product line entered the market-place in ~ 1958 - Blue Cornflower was the ONLY PATTERN available - designed by Joseph Baum. THIS NEW PRODUCT was called PYROCERAM - made out of a SHOCK-PROOF CERAMIC GLASS invented by S. Donald Stookey in 1953 – developed & used for nose-cones of missiles, of all things. This product line was designed to be ALL PURPOSE - for FREEZER, FRIDGE, TABLE-TOP, STOVE-TOP, AND OVEN - and did so WELL. This product was also dishwasher-safe.The PYROCERAM LID - was available until 1959 for their large square skillet - bearing a similar cornflower design as the dish BUT not quite the same - 1960 a crystal-clear ovenproof PYREX glass lid was offered in its place. This ORIGINAL glass product was available until ~2000 - then discontinued due to cost. Many CORNING*WARE cookware and bakeware items cam with crystal-clear glass PYREX Lids. These Lids are safe when used on the cookware items but not directly on stovetop heating elements – as with PYREX bakeware items. The PYREX P-83-C Lid would fit this CORNING*WARE P-83-B Skillet.Pyroceramic CORNING*WARE Glass is stovetop safe – to the standards of when it was manufactured. That said …****NOTE******A “GRID” – CORNING-PYREX’s term for a wire triangle (star, square (any shape) – purchased for a couple of $ in most hardware stores) – is to be used on top of the stove element, beneath the pot for some heating surfaces.USE MED to lo-MED/HI heat to bring the water to a slow boil to prevent damage to the pot – applies to ALL Stove-Top PYROCERAMIC CORNING*WARE items. The “intensity” of our appliances has escalated over the years compared to when these products were first released – THAT’s why HI should not be used. Some appliance surfaces are not able to tolerate a GRID – often those surfaces are more apt to heat the PYROCERAMIC CORNING*WARE Glass directly.ALWAYS best to check with the manufacturer’s instructions with regards to YOUR heating surface. A similar product PYROFLAM was released in 2009 - lids are oven-proof, not stove-top safe as the cooking vessel but safe used as lids. CORNING*WARE - All/Just White PatternThe All/Just White Pattern was available 1960-2 - 2000. P-Series items 1958 - 1971-2; A-Series items 1972-3 - 1988; N-series items were available from 1977-80 ...All-White Pattern - Centura (dinnerware); All White Cookware; Coupe Shape -This pattern was offered for quite a long period of time. A very broad range of dinnerware, cookware, accessories, and bakeware items were available in this pattern. It was always very popular with consumers. CORNING - PYREX - CORNING would manufacture compatible items for its different divisions. For example - PYREX Lids were made for PYREX and CORNING*WARE cookware items.
