About the ArtistIra Moskowitz (1912-2001) was born in Poland but moved with his family to New York City in 1927 where he received a full scholarship to attend the New York Art Students League. In 1935, he traveled to what is now Israel where he lived until 1937. He returned to New York in 1938 to marry artist Anna Barry. The couple visited the Taos and Santa Fe areas of New Mexico, eventually living in that area until the 1950s. While in Taos he earned a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1943. Moskowitz’s work during his time in the southwest focused on landscapes and area cultures, especially pueblo life. Moskowitz later moved back to New York where print making took a larger role in his work focusing largely on religious (Judaic) subjects. His works have been exhibited widely, and including the Art Institute of Chicago, Carnegie Institute, Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum, New York, National Academy of Design-Exhibited, and the Society of Independent Artists. He is best known for Judaic genre, printmaking, and portrayals of pueblo southwest life.
