Description: Vintage Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage, impressionistic oil painting on canvas laid to board. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This painting depicts the coastline of New Zealand's Lyttelton Harbor, rendered with strong brushwork in earth tones. The art is nicely presented in a gold-finished wooden frame which is more recent than the painting. The sight area measures approximately 19 3/8 inches by 23 3/8 inches (the board dimensions are slightly larger, at approximately 20 inches by 24 inches). The exterior frame measurements are about 23 1/2 inches by 27 1/2 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs 6 pounds 10.6 ounces. This painting would make a super addition to a collection of vintage fine art. Identification The painting is by Cecil F. Kelly. Cecil Fletcher Kelly (1878-1954) is a well-known, listed New Zealand artist with a listing on AskART. Online research revealed that Kelly studied at the Canterbury College School of Art, where he later taught. He was a student of Petrus Van der Veiden. Kelly exhibited at the 1934 Paris Salon, and at the Royal Academy in London in 1936. Other exhibitions included those at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Walker Galleries, the Royal Cambrian Academy, and the Birmingham Art Gallery. Kelly was represented at the Empire Art Exhibition and at the Centennial Exhibition of New Zealand of 1940. He was an active member of the Canterbury Society of Arts. His paintings are present in the collection of New Zealand's National Art Gallery, and in the galleries at Christchurch and Dunedin. Kelly specialized in landscape oil paintings executed with bold brushwork. Favorite locales included Lyttelton Harbour and the Canterbury foothills of the Southern Alps. Condition The painting looks great overall. It is nicely framed, and ready to hang and enjoy. The painting appears to have been cleaned at some point prior to my ownership. There is scattered, fine craquelure, minor traces of soiling, and minor, darkened varnish (visible upon very close inspection). In the upper quarter of the painting, there is some slight rippling to the canvas (possibly related to the event that created some minor water stains verso). There are a few subtle, nearly flat bubbles beneath the canvas that do not detract; these are difficult to see upon regular viewing. There are no known restorations. The frame looks very good, with light wear. Please review the photos, and ask any questions you may have prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1. Payments Taxes may be applicable.
