"The Wild Party" is the author's first published work and is an epic book-long narrative poem in the classical style. It was published at the height of prohibition and was widely banned for its content which includes illegal bathtub gin and colorful eccentric characters. The book was adapted into film in 1975, and was made into two different musicals, both performed in New York City. The book has been translated into French, German, and Spanish. Joseph Moncure March was an American poet, author, screenwriter, essayist, and editor born on July 27, 1899, in New York City. He is best known for his long narrative jazz age poems "The Wild Party" and "The Set Up". He attended Amherst College. March served in the US Army during World War II. He was a protege of Robert Frost. He worked for 4 years as the managing editor of The New Yorker magazine. He helped create the magazine's "Talk of the Town" front section. Due to the risqué content of his first published work, "The Wild Party", it took him three years to find a publisher. Once published, the book was a great success despite being banned in Boston. In 1929, March moved to Hollywood to provide additional dialogue for the film "Journey's End" and to turn the silent version of Howard Hughes' classic "Hell's Angels" into a talkie. He stayed with Hughes' Caddo Pictures Studio for several years, and he oversaw the release of "Hell's Angels". March worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood until 1940, under contract to MGM and Paramount, and later as a freelancer for Republic Pictures and other studios. He wrote at least 19 produced scripts during his career, including "Three Faces West", a knockoff of "The Grapes of Wrath". During World War II, March worked at a ship building plant and wrote features for the New York Times. In later years he wrote documentaries for the US Department of State and industrial films for Ford Motor Company, General Motors, American Airlines, and others. March wrote several scripts for films starring the industrial films icon Thelma "Tad" Tadlock including "Design for Dreaming" in 1956, and "A Touch of Magic" in 1961. Both of his long narrative poems were made into films. Robert Wise's 1949 film version of "The Set Up" starred Robert Ryan. Merchant Ivory Productions produced the 1975 version of "The Wild Party". The Archives and Special Collections at Amherst College holds a substantial collection of March's personal papers, including unpublished poems, scripts, and a memoir. Books by March include "The Wild Party" (1928), "The Set Up" (1928), and "Fifteen Lyrics" (1929). Motion pictures written by March include "The Wild Party" (1975), "The Set Up" (1949), "Madame Butterfly" (1932), "Hell's Angels" (1930), "Hot Saturday" (1932), "Three Faces West" (1940), "Journey's End" (1930), "Her Jungle Love" (1938), "Sky Devils" (1932), "Hoop-La" (1933), "Two Alone" (1934), "A Man From Wyoming" (1930), "Wagons Westward" (1940), "Hideaway Girl" (1936), "Jealousy" (1934), "Jennie Gerhardt" (1933), "Flirting With Fate" (1938), "Woman Doctor" (1939), "The Music Goes 'Round" (1936), "And Sudden Death" (1936), "Lonestar Raiders" (1940), "A Touch of Magic" (1961), "The American Road" (1953), and "Forgotten Girls" (1940). Joseph Moncure March died on February 14, 1977, in Los Angeles, California.
