Whether they should be framed, kept in folders of meter corner-pasted into books, is a matter of personal choice. The important thing is that they can be enjoyed again and again treasures indeed, to keep for all time. DUFY (1877-1953) Raoul Dufy was born at Le Havre on the 3rd June, 1877, one of a family of nine children born to a not toe prosperous, but very happy couple. He inherited his father's love of music, and this together with a love of the sca, was to be reflected in the artist's works. Until 1905 Duly painted in a sub-impressionist manner, but then at the age of twenty-eight he came under the influence of Les Fauves ("The Wild Beasta"), the school of painters, of which Matiase was the most famous. Then in 1008 the works of Cezanne shaped his subsequent painting. In 1911 at the age of thirty-four Dufy designed woodcuts and printed them on dress fabrics. This was a tremendous sureens and enriched him so that he could afford to travel widely. A brilliant technician, Dufy was a great and gay lover of life in all its aspects, and this together with his intense emotional feeling, gives his paintings the exhilaration of living life to the full. These ten prints are an excellent cross-section of his finest works. As one can see, Dufy's genius was to invite the viewer to share his memories of hot sumpter days on the Riviera, the excited murmur of the race-course, the bubbling gaiety of regattas, the hot carthy smell of harvest in Provence. In contrast, in plate 2, "Orpheus" and plate 6, "Venus", Dufy invites na to join him in contemplation of the meaning and mystery of life. In 1938, at the age of sixty-one, he was a victim of arthritis, which paralysed his arms and legs. Hia immense will-power and courage enabled him to bear his illness with great patience and dignity, and even when completely immobilised he pondered the problems of painting technique. Throughout his life, Dufy was fascinated by the art of capturing the impression of movement on canvas, and in plates 1, 3, 5, 7 and 8 we can compare the various ways in which he sought to achieve this. Some of his original paintings can be seen in the Tate Gallery and in the Courtauld Institute in London.
