Vintage Allen Pooyouma Hopi Sterling Silver and Turquoise Ring Handmade Signed

Description: Vintage sterling silver and turquoise ring made by the Hopi silversmith Allen Pooyouma. A 7/8" x 5/8" turquoise cabochon mounted in a finely toothed bezel and framed in twisted wire; overall dimensions of mounted turquoise 1" x 3/4". A lovely turquoise, with beautiful banded inclusions. Signed inside the ring with Pooyouma's corncob mark and stamped "STERLING". A refined, elegant ring made by one of the originators of Hopi silversmithing. Allen Pooyouma (1922-2014) was born in Hootvilla, Arizona, and learned silversmithing from his father at the age of 15. His father is Gene Nuvhoyouma, and his uncle is the great Hopi master Ralph Tawangyawma (1894-1972). Due to his poor eyesight, Pooyouma was not drafted into the Army during World War II, so he continued making jewelry on the reservation and supplied his work to Doc Williams Saddle & Curio Shop in Flagstaff until the mid-1940s. After that, he worked with his uncle Ralph Tawangyawma in Tucson, where he acquired advanced techniques and created many of his own unique shapes and designs. In the 1940s and 1950s, he was an early adopter of the overlay technique invented by Hopi artist Paul Saufkie (1904-1998) in the 1930s, and is said to be one of the artists who established the technique as a Hopi style along with other artists of the same age, Harry Sakyesva (1922-1969?) and Victor Coochwytewa (1922-2011). However, Allen Pooyouma's style/style in his work is very varied, and he is an artist who is skilled at combining traditional Navajo techniques such as file work and stump work with the relatively new overlay technique at the time to create a somewhat organic and lively motif.
