Description: Vintage Signed Pencil Sketch of Lyrebirds by Feodor Malcolm 19th CenturyVictorian Era 18"x 15" Framed11.5"x 8.5" Image Area This was done in regular pencil, as is evident on close examination, but it is also a wonderfully realistic sketch of these beautiful male Lyrebirds, native to the southeastern Australia. It's name comes from the 'Lyre' shape of the males tail feathers, not as "Liar" as many hear it. It's apparently a coincidence that they are magnificent at mimicry, able to imitate many sounds from the human voice to chainsaws. One at an Australian zoo perfectly, and eerily, imitates the sound of a human baby crying. You can see that on youtube.I can find no reference to the artist, but he was a very good one. The paper is very old and is showing it's age in the brown discoloration, especially along the edges. This may or may not be to your taste. I think it really gives evidence to the great age of the work. We have two works by this artist, both in the same size and format, being sold separately. The other is of the beautiful 'Ruffed Grouse'. (framedart)
