Description: OVERVIEW: Here’s a great 56cm vintage 1982 TREK 720 touring bike — frame is basically the holy grail of touring frames, with full Reynolds 531 tubing, and beautiful lugs, and ‘Trek’ pantographs, and long Campagnolo dropouts, and crazy-loooong chainstays (so long that a tandem-length chain is needed) — that came to me as a partial bike, and which I built up the other day into a modern touring bike with a bombproof Shimano 9x3 touring setup. Bike is fully tuned and ready to ride; I’ve been wrenching on bikes for more than 40 years, much of that time professionally. Serial number reveals this TREK to be a 1982 TREK 720, inarguably one of the best- and most-sought-after touring frames ever made, with full Reynolds 531 steel tubeset (and other attributes listed above). Bike is definitely a rider, and not wall art. Frameset has absolutely no dents or dings (with exception of some kickstand pinch just aft of the BB, which is very common and cosmetic-only), and tubing is structurally basically perfect, but paint is showing its age, with many small flaws in the finish, such as scuffs and areas of missing paint, from being on earth for more than 40 years. The worst areas were the chainstays, which I waxed and then covered with the toughest electrical tape available (the same tape I use on all my personal bikes’ chainstays). That said, bike looks very presentable from 10 feet. Drivetrain is bombproof low-mileage 9x3 classic touring setup, including Shimano Deore LX 9-sp long-cage indexing rear derailleur, Campagnolo Centaur triple front derailleur, new SRAM 11-32 9-sp cassette, and low-mileage Shimano Dura-Ace 9-sp bar-end shifters (right/rear shifter can shift in index or friction mode, left/front shifter is friction only). Crankset is near-mint Sugino modern hollow-axle crankset with custom 50-39-30 chainrings. mounted to like-new Sugino Outboard-bearing BB. Brakes are new Tektro R539 long-reach caliper brakes with new cartridge pads. Wheels are TREK Matrix 700c wheels and 36-hole, with both hubs just serviced by me (and with a new Shimano freehub on the rear). Tires are matched set of 700x32c Vittoria touring tires mounted atop new tubes (the 32c tires fit easily in the frame, btw; I test-mounted a pair of 700x37c Continental touring tires and they also fit with all kinds of room to spare). Bars are modern Salsa 44cm bars with flared ends, and stem is 80mm Race Face threadless stem (the use of which is enabled by new Profile Design threaded-to-threadless stem adapter). Brake levers are new Tektro aero levers, and bars are newly wrapped with new black cork tape. Seatpost is black Titec 27.2 seatpost, and saddle is comfy leather Specialized saddle. All cables and housing are brand new. Again, bike is fully tuned and ready to ride. (No pedals are mounted, obviously, but I could include some platforms for free if you’d like.) MEASUREMENTS: Frame measures 56cm from center of BB to top of seat-tube. Top-tube measures about 55cm from center-2-center. Standover is about 32.25 inches with the current 700x32c tires mounted. PRICE/SHIPPING: But It Now price is $666. Shipping to anywhere in Lower 48 United States is $149 (sorry, NO shipping to Alaska or Hawaii; also, NO shipping to PO Boxes) — but if you live near the Seattle Metro area, you can instead pick up for FREE at my home in the Redmond WA area, which is about a half hour drive due east of downtown Seattle.
