Description: OVERVIEW: Here’s a great 48cm vintage 1981 TREK touring bike with a Reynolds 531 steel frame (with beautiful lugs and ‘Trek’ pantographs), which came to me as a partial bike, and which I built up the other day much the way it would’ve come stock in 1981 (but with indexing bar-end shifters — and modern bars and stem). Bike is fully tuned and ready to ride; I’ve been wrenching on bikes for more than 40 years, much of that time professionally. Serial number reveals this TREK to be a 1981 610 model, with Reynolds 531 steel double-butted frame (and Ishiwata steel rear-triangle and fork). This TREK predates the creation of TREK’s 520 touring model (the 520 premiered in 1983), but this 1981 610 frame the was the highest-end touring model offered that year by TREK (with the nicest tubeset, the longest chainstays, the longest wheelbase, and the largest tire-clearance). Frameset has absolutely no dents or dings, and navy blue paint is in nice shape for being more than 40 years old, with just a few small spots of missing paint, as well as some minor scuffs and marks from apparently limited use (and paint itself shines up nicely). Drivetrain is bombproof low-mileage Shimano 6x3 classic touring setup, including vintage Deore DX long-cage rear derailleur, vintage Suntour Blue Line front derailleur, vintage Shimano indexing 13-28 freewheel, and vintage 6-speed downtube shifters which I’ve mounted as bar-ends using new Shimano bar-end mounts (right/rear shifter is Shimano 105 and can shift in index or friction mode, left/front shifter is vintage Suntour and is friction only). Crankset is near-mint vintage Shimano 110-bcd crankset with low-mile 46-36-26 chainrings, mounted to new buttery smooth Shimano square-taper bottom bracket. Brakes are Suntour Superbe long-reach caliper brakes with newish pads. Wheels are 700c and 36-hole, with both hubs just serviced by me; rear wheel is Sun M13 eyeleted rim laced to modern Shimano hub, front wheel is vintage Rigida eyeleted rim laced to Normandy Competition hub. Tires are matched set of 700x28c Continental tires mounted atop new tubes (the 28c tires fit easily in the frame, btw; I test-mounted a pair of 700x37c Continental touring tires and they also fit easily). Bars are modern FSA 43cm 31.8 drop bars, and stem is new 70mm 31.8 threadless stem (the use of which is enabled by new Profile Design threaded-to-threadless stem adapter). Brake levers are vintage Shimano non-aero levers, and bars are newly wrapped with new black cork tape. Seatpost is vintage SR LaPrade 27.2 saddle, and saddle is like-new Bontrager saddle. All cables and housing are brand new. Again, bike is fully tuned and ready to ride. (No pedals are mounted, obviously, but I could include some platforms for free if you’d like.) MEASUREMENTS: Frame measures 48cm from center of BB to top of seat-tube. Top-tube measures about 51.5cm from center-2-center. Standover is about 29.75 inches with the current 700x28c tires mounted. PRICE/SHIPPING: But It Now price is $499. Shipping to anywhere in Lower 48 United States is $149 (sorry, NO shipping to Alaska or Hawaii; also, NO shipping to PO Boxes) — but if you live near the Seattle Metro area, you can instead pick up for FREE at my home in the Redmond WA area, which is about a half hour drive due east of downtown Seattle.
