The rules of the game remain unchanged since the 16th century and have been the basis for some of the best-known games played today.Pachisi has traditionally been played on cloth, often embroidered with intricate details. The game is played on a board in the shape of a cross, the middle of which houses a large square called the Charkoni. In the earliest versions, 16 beehive shaped wooden game pieces were used to play the game, four each, painted to match the four colors of the cloth of the game board. The element of the chance was provided by numbered “throwing sticks,” that when tossed to the ground, determined how far each player moved their game piece, similar to the dice used in modern games. Pachisi, which is part of the cultural classics line of historic games, harkens back to the origins of this classic game with a vividly colored cloth board decorated with Indian woodblock imagery. The 16 wooden game pieces are crafted in the iconic beehive shape, and the “throwing sticks” are burned with the appropriate scoring marks.
