Description: Vintage 1950s Riley's toffee tin amazing condition 15 cm tall 13 cm round at lid 10 cm at bottom Riley's Toffee is a British toffee brand with a history that began in the 1900s: Very very minor age related marks Origin The company started when brothers Fred and John Riley used their mother Ellen's recipe to make toffee in their home around 1905. Factory The brothers moved their production to the Kingston Toffee Mills in Hopwood Lane, Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1911. The factory was previously the Kingston Biscuit Factory. Ownership The company was sold to Nuttall's after the death of John Herbert Riley in 1953. It was then bought by the Guinness Group, Callard & Bowser, United Biscuits / McVities, and finally Kraft. Discontinuation In the mid-1990s, Kraft decided to stop making Riley's Toffee Rolls to focus on Altoid mints. Revival In 2008, Freya Sykes, the niece of the founders, acquired the rights to Riley's Toffee Rolls. She discovered her grandmother's recipe in her Economical Recipe Book and acquired the rights to the original recipe. The new Riley's Toffee Rolls have a softer texture.
