Description: This is a small grouping of items from the same person who was a class of 1944 Naval Academy graduate. These items belonged to Lorenzo W Baldwin, who was born in 1921, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1943 and served on numerous ships including the USS Honolulu, which was torpedoed in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and became a naval aviator. Here is his obituary that I found online: ALDWIN Lorenzo Wilson Baldwin, Jr. Cdr. USN, Ret, died June 16, 2013 in Jacksonville, Florida from Parkinson s disease. He was born December 4, 1921 in Jacksonville. He attended local schools and grew up with a love of small boat sailing which continued after he entered the Naval Academy, graduating in June, 1943 (class of 1944). After graduation he served on the USS Honolulu which was torpedoed by enemy aircraft in the battle of Leyte Gulf. He entered flight training in 1945 and was part of the generation of aviators that spanned the transition from propeller planes to new jet attack and fighter aircraft. He tested the first carrier steam catapult aboard the USS Intrepid, was the CO of an attack squadron on the USS Shangri La, and served on the USS Enterprise, the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the US Navy. Before retiring, he worked with the early use of computers in naval aviation. After retirement, he was employed in computer and auditing banking activities. He was a member of St. Mark s Episcopal Church, the Florida Yacht Club, English Speaking Union, Jacksonville Historical Society and the River Rats.
