Description: A Carte De Visite CDV photo of Major General Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel. Mitchel was a noted astronomer before the Civil War, where he ordered the famous Great Locomotive Chase in 1861. In 1862, he was promoted to Major General and this photograph shows Mitchell wearing the two stars of that rank. He died later that year. The CDV is by Charles Taylor & Co of New Bedford. About 2 1/2" x 4 1/4". Good condition as shown with a stain on the front and old collector handwriting on the back. A rare piece of history and an awesome addition to any collection.
