THIS ITEM IS----a wonderful original Charles Joshua Chaplin (1825-1891) print of PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL, it is signed CHAPLIN and i think a title but it must be a printed signiture. under the right corner and stamped in the paper (1893 The Worlds Columbian Exposition, Chicago Litho), the print is in nice shape with a small scratch you can see around her arm and a water stain you can see above the print. this print was sold at the 1893 Worlds fair, by George Barrie (From 1893 to 1895 the Philadelphia printer and publisher, George Barrie, was at work upon a large and lavish series of original etchings and chromolithographs detailing exhibits of the fine art from participating countries at the World's Columbian Exposition. The original prints, such as this fine example, were printed on either China or Japon papers and were limited to an edition of only two hundred impressions. Barrie hired some of the finest etchers of the time to work on the series. Charles Joshua Chaplin was a French painter and printmaker who painted both landscapes and portraits. He was an accomplished artist mastering different techniques such as pastels, lithography, watercolor, chalk, oil painting and etching. He was best known for his elegant portraits of young women.
