Description: Vintage 1800's J. Russell & Co. Green River Works Large 15" Knife, 9.75" Blade John Russell began manufacturing tools and cutlery in 1834 and established a new factory on the Green River in Massachusetts in 1836. His knives rivaled the quality of those manufactured in Sheffield, England, and as settlers moved West in the 1840s Russell's Green River knives moved with them. Green River knives were ubiquitous in the early American West, and the phrase "up to Green River" entered the American lexicon meaning something well constructed or very well done. These included the “Buffalo Skinner” with its characteristic wide point that turns up, and the “Dadley Universal”, which was an early “utility” knife”. Boning knife; ”semi-skinner”, which was easier for cutting up and skinning medium game than its big brother (for bison essentially) and the “beef-skinner”, later called the “butcher” which had a long 20 cm blade for cutting up meat. This knife has a 5-pin handle. I have printed an article on this knife and will include it with purchase. The owner was a historian, and this knife is the real deal. If only it could talk. Please see pictures. Insurance will be included with shipping. Thank you for looking!
