The city is formed by the municipalities (freguesias) of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Santa Luzia, São Pedro and Sé. The nickname “do Heroísmo” was given to the city by Queen Maria II. because of their steadfast support of the Traditionalists during the Miguelist War. Angra do Heroísmo is the oldest city in the Azores and was granted city rights through a Carta Régia in 1534. It was simultaneously canonized by Pope Paul III. elevated to the episcopal see of the diocese of Angra. However, construction of the cathedral (Sé de São Salvador) did not begin until 1570. The cathedral and the city were severely damaged in a strong earthquake in 1980. After both towers collapsed in 1982, the restored church was reopened on 3 June 1982.
