The lobed body of this beaker is embellished with the contemporary engraved coat of arms* depicting on a cross between four lions passant guardant, a Bible lying fesseways of the field, clasped and garnished, the clasps in base, all above the inscription "Arthur Reed Ropes, 1882"**. This impressive beaker retains the original gilding. This exceptional beaker was crafted by the renowned London silversmith John Samuel Hunt and bears the retailer"s mark "Hunt & Roskell, Late Storr and Motimer" to the underside. This antique silver gilt beaker is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire. * This coat of arms pertains to the University of Cambridge. ** Arthur Reed Ropes (23 December 1859 – 11 September 1933) is better known under his pseudonym Adrian Ross, was a prolific writer of lyrics and contributed to a large range of British musicals. During World War I he was a founder of the Performing Rights Society as he continued his success, including writing the popular novel "The Hole of the Pit" and a multitude of short stories. Condition This Victorian beaker is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The engraved inscription and coat of arms are all very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the beaker are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of Victorian silverware.
