Description: VICTORIAN FISHEL NESSLER FN Co. GOLD PLATED BELT BUCKLE MUSEUM QUALITY - READ. One of the finest belt buckles of its kind that I have ever had. Heavily gold plated over a bronze substrate. The gold is so heavy and intact that there is no place where the substrate is revealed, but the detail is so fine that it can only be bronze. There are dozens of tiny flowers and each one is individually picked out. I will elaborate on the FN company later but they were known for their extreme dedication to producing the finest product possible utilizing the best materials available. The buckle is a supreme examplar of its genre (non-precious metal) and could easily belong in a museum based on the quality and near-mint condition. The condition of the buckle face / front is outstanding. It literally gleams. If you enlarge some of the high-resolution images you might see a speck of green (verdigris) here and there but there’s nothing evident in real life. The back shows a minimal amount of age-related wear and there’s a small amount of wear on the bar. Please enlarge all the pics. Fishel Nessler logo trademark is on the bar. The pictures simply do not do justice to this special buckle. ABOUT FISHEL NESSLER Fishel, Nessler & Co. was established circa 1886 in New York City. The last listing found for the company in the Jeweler’s Circular was for 1936-1937. The company was highly regarded for its quality and design. They applied for and received many patents over the years, which later turned out to cause legal problems when the partners split and each laid claim to the patents. The company began to have financial problems and one of the owners, Henry Fishel, tried to commit suicide by taking poison pills in a hotel in New Jersey, but as he left a farewell note, his relatives were able to locate him and revive him in time. The last 2 images are the front page article in the N.Y. Times about the incident, which sent shock waves throughout the Jewelers’ Circle and beyond.
