BEHIND THE SCENES TRIVIA : Cristina Raines, under contract with Universal at the time, almost didn't get the leading role due to a female executive at Universal who was more interested in pushing other clients for parts and ignoring her. Raines was told this directly by Michael Winner, who went against the executive's wishes and cast her anyway. Cristina later said this may not have been for the best, however, and as she didn't like Winner's maddening approach to directing. The actress says she cried every day on her way to work, and admitted in a recent interview that she has never watched this film due to the treatment she received on the set. Michael Winner claims the producer wanted Chris Sarandon because he was nominated for an Oscar for Dog Day Afternoon. Winner did not want Sarandon but was afraid to confront the producer. A few weeks into shooting, Winner claims the producer saw dailies with Sarandon and asked "What the hell is this Greek waiter doing in my film?!?" (Referring to Sarandon). Winner told him that was the actor he asked for and by that time no change could be made. Chris Sarandon has stated openly that his experience filming this movie was the worst of his career and made him want to quit acting. As far as the use of people with actual physical deformities in the film, Jeffrey Konvitz says Winner went from subtle and scary to unsubtle and gross. The film's script called for "denizens of hell" to burst through the walls, looking more hideous and demonic than appearing in the final film. However, because of the lower budget and the six-hour time expanse it would have taken to apply for each of the fifty people, Winner instead decided to use genuinely deformed people to play the "denizens" who he explains in his autobiography as "very, very nice human beings" who enjoyed the shoot. This film has a cast of five Oscar winners: Martin Balsam, José Ferrer, Christopher Walken, Eli Wallach (recipient of an Honorary Oscar), and Richard Dreyfuss (in a brief cameo). It also has an additional eight Oscar nominees: Chris Sarandon, Ava Gardner, Arthur Kennedy, Burgess Meredith, Sylvia Miles, Tom Berenger, William Hickey, and Jeff Goldblum. All but Goldblum were nominated in acting categories. A library of 20,000 to 30,000 video items from 1978 forward, including multiples, is being offered for the first time to the eBay community.
