Description: Bid with confidence! We would like to thank all of our customers for their support!! You are looking at an extremely rare piece of United States History. Between the 1880s and the 1950s, the USGS produced engravings used to reproduce topographic and geologic maps within the agency. The engravings are color-separated which means there is one engraving for each color used on the final printed maps. For topographic maps such as the one for Peosta, IA / Dubuque, IA, there are three engravings: black ink for cultural, transportation, and boundary features, brown for contours, and blue for water features such as rivers and lakes. Together they would make a complete map. For printing purposes, the copper engravings are mirror images (left-to-right reversed). Etched by a USGS cartographic technician called a “map engraver,” the words and text characters are backwards. For maps, “east” appears on the left side of the plate instead of the right as it does on the printed map. The plates being offered to you were engraved in 1890. They are at 1:125,000 scale. They are 17x21 inches. They weigh about 37lbs together. They are a copper alloy material. There are three total engravings in this lot. They have not been cleaned or altered in any way, there is a process to clean these plates that can be found online, or I can send you a link. Once cleaned (or left original) they are one of a kind beautiful pieces of history. Engraved on 3 plate(s) of size(s) 17x21 inches weighing 37 pounds (estimated). Plates are usable but often dirty and tarnished; some might have protective coatings/coverings or be warped, pitted, or scratched. Buyer pays Shipping.
