Fine chili midare hamon. Extremely fine mokume hada. Naganata grooves (hormone) look like they were cut with great precision and are filled with red roiro lacquer. Gilt copper habaki, extremely long 20 inch ubu mu mei nakago with one mekugi ana. Nakago exhibits lovely late Koto/early Shinto untouched patination. This is a very powerful naginata and not the usual flimsy decorative pole arm. Condition of the blade is bright with some minor surface staining and no kizu. A very minor loss at extreme point (boshi). This most impressive naginata comes complete with its original oak pole decorated with crushed abalone, copper fittings and gilt string wrapping. The iron base fitting is present. The wood saya is finished in gilded ‘toadskin’ lacquer in good condition with loss at tip. This lovely Japanese pole arm would make a great addition to any collection of Japanese samurai swords.
