Description: Stamped only "Dame Kendall & Stoddard Boston," on the faceplate and "5" on the foot, this clearly Julius Vom Hofe made reel was produced in the late 1870s to early 1880s--right at the start of his solo reel-making career. It is a Kentucky-style New York reel, with sliding click and drag switches on the faceplate, combined with New York-style foot and S-handle--a reel style that was used in better quality freshwater reels from the late 1870s through the 1880s. A somewhat scarce reel to find in any size (one shows up every decade or so in a Lang's auction, for example), this one is in the elusive No. 5 size, measuring approximately 1 7/8 inches in diameter with 1 1/4" pillars. It grades VG- due to plating loss (heaviest on the foot, see photos) and weak (but functional) click and drag. It has well better than average retention of its nickel plating, compared with similar age reels. Cool and important on so many different levels. Rarely comes to market--this may be a unique opportunity to acquire this reel! Buy with confidence. Accurate descriptions and history. Seller is well-published and an NFLCC and ORCA member.
