We’d be honored to add you to our customer wish list.We ask what we consider to be a fair price for anything we sell and understand that our idea of a fair price may be someone else's 'that's too much' price. If that's the case, feel free to make us an offer and will consider it. We also have sales regularly, so check back often. There is always a Sale by TheBay!We bid on several lots of items of an online estate sale/auction for a lady who had passed away by the name of Mary Clemon Payne back in 2018. Mary Payne was the Executive Secretary for the Stone Mountain Memorial Association when it was formed to run Stone Mountain in 1958. Some of you may recall one of the trains that ran at Stone Mountain that was named The Mary Payne Train. It has since been replaced of course, but the park named it after her in her honor for her years of dedication to the park. You can read Mary's obituary online to learn more about the wonderful woman she was.Mary had a plethora of incredible Stone Mountain memorabilia and we were able to obtain quite a few very cool items, many of which are certainly one of a kind. We will be listing some items over the coming days, so if you're into Stone Mountain collectibles, we guarantee you that we'll be listing some items you are all but certain to never see for sale again. Now onto the item for sale. For sale is a very cool letter typed by the man who is responsible for finally getting Robert E. Lee's U.S. citizenship restored which he had lost following the Civil War.This two page letter was written to Mary Payne and signed by the gentleman who wrote it. It is 100% guaranteed that this letter is one of a kind and has such cool subject matter written by a really impressive gentleman in correcting part of our nation's history and our nation's most unfortunate war.The contents of this letter is really cool in and of itself, but the man who wrote this letter also has a one of a kind history in something I never even knew before I did a bit of research. The man's name is Elmer Otis Parker and when I did a quick internet search about him, I came across his obituary and found out some very interesting history I never heard about. After the Civil War ended, many of those who fought for the Confederacy lost their U.S. citizenship, including Robert E. Lee.President Andrew Johnson issued a proclamation of amnesty and blanket pardons for nearly all of those who fought for the Confederacy in 1865, but the document required Lee to apply separately. On October 2, 1865, Lee signed the required amnesty oath and filed the application through Ulysses S. Grant. The application finally reached Secretary of State William Seward who gave it to a friend as a souvenir.Apparently, State Department officials pigeonholed Lee's oath and application and Lee was never pardoned nor did he ever have his U.S. citizenship restored.Robert E. Lee later passed away stateless in 1870.This is where Elmer Otis Parker enters the story.Elmer retired as the Assistant Director of the National Archives in Washington D.C.Elmer discovered Robert E. Lee's oath and application to have his citizenship restored in the national archives and presented it to congress. As a result, congress voted on July 22, 1975 to restore Robert E. Lee's United States citizenship by a vote of 407-10.When we found that out, we realized the contents of this letter wasn't just cool, but the man who typed and signed the letter was really cool too and given his position upon his retirement, it's safe to suggest that he knew very well what the contents of the letter was about. As you can see, we didn't reveal the entire letter in the pictures above. We figured that the next owner of this letter will be very stoked to read what history has revealed about the subject of the letter. The letter was written to Mary Payne, the Assistant to the General Manage of the Stone Mountain Memorial Association that ran Stone Mountain for decades. The subject of the letter was whether Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and "Stonewall" Jackson ever met. The letter also reveals some interesting information about the horses that each man is riding on the infamous carving on Stone Mountain. This let will be shipped in a padded envelope via insured ground advantage with the USPS. We put all our items that ship in padded envelopes in between cardboard for extra protection during shipping. Thanks for looking and God bless!
