Description: Valley of Bacaand From Baca to Beulah2 Books by Jennie Smith 1876 and 1880 Press of Jennings & Pyle/ Garrigues Brothers The 2 hardcover books have identical red covers with black-printed graphic on front cover of flowers (poppies?) and foliage; books are same size of 4.5x6.75", there are no dust jackets. Each book's condition listed below._______________________________________________________ Valley of Baca: A Record of Suffering and Triumph, by Jennie Smith, 1876. 288 pages. Cover description: Front cover shows mottled darkening all over, but mainly a darkened strip 2" wide running length of cover at front margin/edge. Same dark mottling on back cover, all over more so than along edge. The mottling does not distract too much, the graphic catches the eye. Back cover has width-wise light narrow streak at center, streak could be in original manufacturing, front cover has small, very narrow same streak. Spine is quite lightened to a red-brown from exposure; it shows several small, dark spots, spine ends are soft. Title on spine is gilt-stamped, somewhat dulled, lettering is somewhat fancy. Book has cracked at inside both covers, webbing shows, still holding but with use should be taped; cracking leaves front and back covers with a lot of give. Both covers' edges have light shelf wear, tips are slightly bumped with light wear-through at points. Frontispiece is black and white "Portrait of the Author" which at my first glace looked like a woman in a funeral casket, it is author lying on a wheeled, 1800's hospital(?) bed. The tissue covering the photo has separated at binding 4" from bottom up, has several good-sized light brown spots on it and has been glued in just a bit too close to title page causing title page to have light buckle. Light, length-wise crack at Contents page, holding okay, also stressed between pages 51-52, okay, followed by light stress couple more following pages, light crack at 64-65. Contents shows 22 chapters concerning author's illness and religion. Rather odd paragraph on last page of book telling how this book was printed and author was healed after book was printed, which means this book is a second or so edition, does not so state in book. Then author went on to write the sequel which is described below. I am surprised there would be more than one edition as it is a serious book encompassing a lot of illness and religion descriptions, although it is very interesting! Top tip at pages 33-34 has fold crease as does pages 51-52. Few last pages quite shallow bump crease at lower tip. Starting at page 79-110 there is a 2" long, shallow crease at upper tip, pages 81-86 have same plus shorter mark; in this general area are a few mid-brown age spots, no text involved. Few other areas in text pages with age spots and a small bit of soil. Pages 181-2 have tiny gouge bottom of page. Lightly cracked pages 192-3, 224-5. Pages are light ivory in color, a good sturdy paper. Top leaf edge age spot mottled, front and bottom leaf edges lightly mottled, leaf edges otherwise clean. From Baca to Beulah: Sequel to Valley of Baca; From a Couch of Suffering to My Feet, to Exalt His Holy Name. 1880. 358 pages. Cover description: Front cover has mottled darkening especially along front edge, back cover shows light, all-over mottling with one small dot of black which appears to be old writing ink. Spine is exactly as Valley book, probably in bookcase side-by-side for long time, it is a red-brown color with light mottling. Some light edge wear on spine, ends soft, about 3" of rubbing near top on spine's back edge, and a small white dot near spine edge at back where opening gutter is a bit weak for 1" and light spot is tiny hole into the red. Title is gilt-stamped, it has faded/dulled somewhat yet remains quite good, lettering used is less fancy and larger than Valley book. Front cover has give but not cracked (see next paragraph), back cover is good with little give. Cover edges with light wear, tips are slightly bumped with light wear-through at points. Frontispiece is quite handsome photo of author; tissue covering it has only slight wear and few tiny brown age spots. There is a good-sized crack between frontispiece page and title page thus the give to front cover, should be carefully taped before much use. Title page has 1" separation near spine from bottom upward. This book has a religious bent to it with more about author's illnesses, above Valley book was more about the illnesses and their trials and tribulations although religion was a theme throughout. Contents shows 28 chapters, 6 more than Valley book. Small, dark spot page 14, small rough area page 15 which appears to be from manufacturing, page 15 also has a 2" fold crease at top tip. Pages 21 and 23 have 1 " light brown spot in text with nothing obscured. Tiny hole through a word pages 95-96; pages 96-97 are cracked at spine. Light brown spots pages 99, 101, 102, 103, 110, 133, 140 in text with nothing obscured. Moderate crack pages 144-145; small brown spots at top margin of pages 158-159. Light crack 178-179 with small brown spots in margins. Page 184 has some brown spots as others above, not in text. Moderate crack between 192-193 and light cracking at 224-225, there is a 1" separation at top of pages 223-226. Page 238 illustration page with small spots in margin, then moderate crack between the blank back page of illustration page and 241. There are a few other small, brown spots that do not interfere with text. Pages are light ivory in color, good sturdy paper; I think some of the cracking between pages came from books being well bound, many pages appear to have not been opened very much. Top leaf edge age-mottled brown spots, front and bottom leaf edges with some spots, leaf edges otherwise clean.
