Description: Max Valier (1895-1930) was an Austrian rocketry pioneer who, in the early 20th century, partnered with German industrialist Fritz von Opel to demonstrate the potential of chemical fuel rockets to power everything from automobiles to aircraft. Valier's dream was a rocket-powered suborbital "Raketenschiff" (Rocket Ship) that could fly from Berlin to New York City in one hour. In a series of published articles, he proposed evolving his rocket plane from existing commercial aircraft, adding rocket boosters to augment conventional motors until the craft was 100% rocket powered. In Weimar Germany, Valier's publications became as popular as Werner Von Braun's "Conquest of Space" articles in "Collier's" would become 20 years later. Along with the works of Hermann Oberth, from whom Valier drew inspiration, they helped formed the basis of Germany's early military rocket program. Unfortunately, Valier was killed in his workshop in 1930 when the propellant chemicals with which he was working exploded.
