Description: From our personal collection we are pleased to offer this fireplace hood that at one time would have graced a cast iron tiled fireplace in a Victorian house. While most hoods were made of cast iron, a small number of these fireplaces were made to accomodate hoods of different materials, such as copper. These materials led themselves to greater artistic freedom. Such is the case here. This hood is embossed with four "Mackintosh Roses and twining rose branches. The term "Mackintosh Rose" came about as stylized roses in this style were a design motif popularized by the Art Nouveau designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh and used in stained glass and other works he produced. While this design motif is still used today this hood, having come from a fireplace of the era is almost certainly of UK origin and I would suggest quite likely originated in Glasgow, where Mackintosh created many of his most famed works. We bought the piece in New Zealand and our intent was to find a fireplace of the era that was designed for this style of hood. Unfortunately we lost the villa for which it was intended in the Christchurch earthquake and it has travelled around the world with s since. We had though or removing the copper from the iron backing and framing it but thought someone else might be up to the challenge of recreating it in a fireplace as we intended. The last photo shows the kind of fireplace that might accomodate it though ones with more decorative tiles are available and would be more appropriate. There is a design number on the back: 484-580. We have placed quite a high price on the piece because we do think that it could be traced back to the Glasgow School and perhaps even to C.R. Mackintosh himself. There is a rationale for believing that might be the case as one of the things about his roese was that, though they appeared to all follow a common pattern none, in his work were exactly the same, as it the case here. We believe we have the pieces in our collection fairly priced for collectors given the rarity and condition of most of them We tend not to make offers to watchers but almost all of our pieces have a best offer option. We do welcome fair offers. If you are interested we do encourage you make an offer. If an item only has a "Buy Now" option it means that we have seen enough sales or have enough information to know the item will sell at that price when the right buyer sees it. The photos form part of the description so please look at them carefully. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you might have before purchasing. We invite you while you are here to look at the other high quality art nouveau collectibles that we have on offer.
