Description: USS SAN FRANCISCO CA-38 naval first day cover with postmark dated Jan 9, 2022 from Findlay, Ohio. Blue photo of ship printed on cachet #3193 by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964 Cover franked with a 3 cent USN stamp # 935 and a 58 cent flag stamp #5657 (FDOI). The USS San Francisco a 588 foot New Orleans Class heavy cruiser built at Mare island and commissioned on 10 February 1934, named for the City of San Francisco. She was serving with the Pacific Fleet until 1939 when she joined the Atlantic Fleet for neutrality patrols. USS San Francisco returned to the Pacific in 1940 was preparing for repairs. She had dismantled guns, in the Pearl Harbor Shipyard, when the 7 December enemy attack started. Her crew was only able to fire at the enemy planes with small arms. Undamaged, the vessel escorted a convoy to Wake Island on 14 December 1941, and sailed to on to Midway Island. The proud ship earned seventeen WWII Battle Stars in the Pacific Theater. Her most famous fight was in the Guadalcanal area Battle of Espirto Santo where she took 45 large caliber hits from enemy battleships and cruisers, and earned a Presidential Unit Citation.
