Description: USS DOWNES DD-375 US Navy Ship damaged in 1941 enemy attack on Pearl Harbor. Cover franked with a 3 USN stamp from 1946 and 32 cent flag stamp (FDOI) Cover with a DIY matte and 5x7 frame, makes a fine gift! USS DOWNES DD-375 Naval cover for the destroyer that was heavily damaged in dry dock during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Cover postmarked on March 17, 1995 at NYC. Blue photo of the USS Downes printed on cachet #2303 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. Surprisingly, this heavily damaged ship was repaired at Mare Island and served in the Pacific for the entire war. However, the repairs involved a complete rebuild with a new hull, that took nearly two years. This 341 foot Farragut Class destroyer was originally built in Norfolk and commissioned in 1937. The vessel was recommissioned 15 November 1943 and she earned four WW II battle stars, including the fighting at Tinian, Leyte Gulf, Saipan and Iwo Jima.Seller has over 60 different covers for ships attacked at Pearl Harbor in 1941, including another cover for USS Downes, post-attack. Check out my other items! These items make fine gifts when mounted on a colored matte and placed in a 5x7 picture frame. Free US Shipping!
