Printed color photo of ship on cachet #1962 with an underway view of the carrier by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964. Cover franked with a 29 cent motorcycle stamp (FDOI) and a 15 cent Vietnam Campaign Ribbon stamp #1802. USS Bennington: This large fighting vessel was commissioned in 1944 and earned three WW II battle stars in the Pacific Theater including Okinawa. She was modernized to handle jet aircraft in the 1950s and eventually became an anti-submarine carrier (CVS-20). She had a tragic hydraulic catapult explosion in 1954 that killed 103 crewmen and injured 201. The Navy switched to steam catapults after that tragic event. Later, she deployed three times off Vietnam earning five Battle Stars. She also served as the recovery ship for the Apollo 4 space mission. Seller has over 70 different aircraft carrier covers.
