Description: This is the World War 2 cruise book for the USS Alabama BB-60 a USS South Dakota BB-57 class Battleship. This book chronicles the 1942 to 1945 World War 2 exploits of the USS Alabama BB-60 the the final unit of the BB-57 class, these ships were to newest class of Battleship that the US Navy had in the early days of World War 2 until the USS Iowa BB-61 class entered the fight in early 1944. The Alabama started her service patrolling the North Atlantic and Arctic Sea from April to August of 1943 on Tirpitz watch. In August 43 the Alabama detached from the Home Fleet and said to Norfolk VA. for overhaul and transfer to the Pacific where she joined up with the fleet for the Gilberts operation and fought is most of the engagements in the Pacific until she participated in bombardments of the Japanese Home Islands in July 1945. The end of the war found the Alabama at sea off of the southern Islands and she entered Tokyo bay on Sept 5th to pick up her Marine detachment and passengers bound for the US. Alabama reached San Francisco on 15 Oct 1945 and was in the SF area til early 1946 before she headed to Seattle for inactivation. For those unfamiliar with cruise books, they are heavily illustrated hardbacks that detail one deployment in the life of a ship. Very similar to high school yearbooks, they often have nice pictures of the ship, crew and places they visited during the trip. They are a great reference for model makers, naval enthusiasts, or historians. Of course, for someone who had a family serve on a particular ship, they would be a great remembrance! These books are becoming increasingly rare as the years go by, all of the South Dakota class Battleships were deemed in excess of Navy needs and were all decommissioned between Jan. and Sept. of 1947 The Alabama BB-60 was sent to the Seattle Navy Depot in early 1946 after post war training cruises for inactivation and was decommissioned 9 Jan. 1947. Alabama sat in storage in reserve piers at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and was formally stricken from the NVR on June 1st 1962, Ex BB-60 was transferred to the Battleship Alabama Commission and towed to Mobile Alabama for her new role as a Museum / War Memorial in Mobile where she remains to this day.
