Used LP NEGATIVLAND: Helter Stupid. Social commentary. Near Mint/VG+ condition

Description: NEGATIVLAND: Helter Stupid. Used LP in Near Mint/Very Good+ condition. SST Records Catalog # SST 252; 1989 Condition: LP in excellent condition, record played all of once. There are a couple of spots with some kind of “gunk” on surface, but sound not affected. Overall surfaces quieter than typical. The jacket has upper right (as seen from front) corner cut off; this was a Radio Promo copy that I got for donating to the college radio station at which I myself was broadcasting Jazz in late 1980s. There is a minor “crunch” and minor wrinkle near bottom right of jacket as seen from front. Overall, jacket is almost pristine and was protected by original shrinkwrap until now. Original soft poly inner sleeve included. Original insert offering “Christianity is Stupid” [see below] t-shirt for sale included. Probably no longer available! Behind the Concept: Negativland! Strange stuff, and truth is I don’t know if the story told here in a sound collage is even based on fact. LP Side One recounts the (alleged) tale of a young man accused of having murdered his parents and two siblings, in Minnesota, after listening to this band’s “Christianity is Stupid” on the album Escape from Noise. (I have never personally heard that recording.) Naturally, the loudly public “Christian” crowd howled for Negativland’s blood and discussion of First Amendment freedom of speech issues bubbled up. LP Side Two purports to be a presentation titled “The Perfect Cut” by one Dick Vaughn, President of the Moribund Music Foundation in Walnut Creek, CA. Hints at a put-on, right? However, the presentation is a realistic primer on what the Music Industry does to seek influence over young people with marketing hype, science-based techniques that help make a record a “hit,” etc. If this entire record, which totals 47+ minutes playing time, is in fact a colossal joke, it is a rather remarkable cultural artifact that should be of interest to collectors seeking such material.
