Box 7156, Louisville, KY 402537-0156 The Pacific Coast Rain Forest is located along the northwest coast of Canada and the United States, from northern California to the Gulf of Alaska. An old-growth coniferous forest with giant trees hundreds of years old and an understory of ferns, mosses and shrubs, the region is one of the largest remaining temperate rain forests in the world, with an average annual rainfall of 80 to 160 inches. It supports the greatest accumulation of organic material per square mile in the world. Olympic National Park in the Olympic Mountains of western Washington, established as a national park in 1938, is one of the finest remaining areas of virgin rain forest in this valuable ecosystem. The Pacific Coast Rain Forest stamp pane features 26 animal and plant species. They are: Western Hemlock, Common Raven, Roosevelt Elk, Vine Maple, Sitka Spruce, Harlequin Duck, Sword Fern, Varied Thrush, Douglas' Squirrel, Oregon Grape, Winter Wren, Oregon Oxalis, Red Huckleberry, American Dipper, Pacific Giant Salamander, Western Tiger Swallowtail, Foliose Lichen, Banana Slug, Chinook Salmon, Cutthroat Trout, Rough-skinned Newt, Tailed Frog, Caddis Fly larvae, Stair-step Moss and Snail-eating Ground Beetle.
