Description: Between 1961 and 1975, the US Postal Service issued 14 stamps that honored American painters. These 14 first day covers commemorate the greatest of American artists. They were a diverse group; Remington and Russell lived in and painted the American West, while Cassatt, Eakins, and others spent many years in Europe and produced much of their work there. Audubon painted animals, birds, and scenes from nature, West was a portraitist, and Grandma Moses was more a folklorist than she was a traditionally trained artist. They are the greats of American art, and they are all here in this lot. All of the covers are unaddressed, fresh, and clean. 11 of the 14 covers are cacheted by Artcraft, while the other three have special cachets: The Remington cover has the official cachet of the Remington Art Memorial in Ogdenburg, New York. The Audubon cover is a full-color envelope designed by the National Audubon Society. The West cover is the official cover of the stamp, designed by Fleetwood.
