LIMITED AVAILABILITY - ONLY A FEW SETS REMAIN Original, Sharp, Bright, Clean, Solidly Bound Book Set Contains Over 200,000 Names of Colored Troops Handsome Cover Design This set is not only a roster but an index to the compiled service records in the National Archives. Using the roster, one can determine who served in the U.S. Colored Troops, which unit they served with, and which have records in the National Archives. The book also enables understanding about exactly how the soldier’s name is listed, the essential information needed for obtaining a Civil War service record. The Roster includes officers and enlisted men, as much of the illegible entries as could be transcribed, and alternative names and initials that were inserted above the name of the original cards. This two-volume roster is an alphabetical listing of volunteer Union soldiers with the United States Colored Troops; it is a tremendous genealogic resource. It has been transcribed from the 98 reels of National Archives Microfilm Group M589 and is easily accessible in alphabetical form. In July 1862 Congress passed acts allowing the enlistment of black soldier into the United States Army. The Emancipation Proclamation, September 1862, was to take effect in January 1863, leading to the official enlistment of black soldiers, but some states and departments were already rising black units. In May 1863, the War Department established the Bureau of Colored Troops to accommodate the organization and recruitment of black troops. As a result, most previously organized troops raised by states were assigned to and redesignated as United States Colored Troops – some exceptions being a few state-designated units from Massachusetts, Connecticut and Louisiana. There were nearly 200,000 soldiers who served in the United States Colored Troops, comprising over 160 cavalry, artillery, infantry and engineer units. There were approximately 100 African-American officers, most serving in the Department of Louisiana under General Benjamin Butler; their names are also included in this roster. The United States Colored Troops enlistees included both free men and ex-slaves and represented thirty-five states and territories, including the District of Columbia. Some of the soldiers listed in this roster will appear more than once, either due to the variant spellings of their names or their enlistment in additional units. Overall this is an extraordinary, unique and high-quality reference for anyone seeking to understand who served in the U.S. Colored Troops during the Civil War.
