Description: A most unusual painting on wood panel---truly unique; your fellow downtown apartment dwellers will not have one: 24" by 30", unframed, featuring some gritty, tough-looking downtown Los Angeles men in a claustrophobic, vertiginous streetscape of old hotel buildings. The Hotel Rosslyn and annex were built in 1914 and 1923, respectively, and were fashionable places to stay, in their day, at Fifth and Main in old downtown. The medium used is likely casein or other non-oil, water-based paint. The painting takes from older Social Realist painting and murals of the early 20th century. There is a little of the style of American artist Ben Shahn in these figures, two wearing wool caps, staring down the viewer. The work is signed on the reverse "Edward XXXXX" (difficult to read----possibly "Sanders") and dated there 2014 (or, possibly, 2004). Despite the recent dates, due to careless handling there are already some areas of abrasion and paint loss, and overall light soiling, especially visible in the white shirt of the figure at right. One of the two paint loss areas is in the lower window near the "Rosslyn" of "Hotel Rosslyn", the other at upper right near the edge. Overall a most unusual work that will make for a true conversation piece. The imperfections can be rectified by a competent restorer.
