Description: VINTAGE RARE UNKNOWN CIRCA 1850 OWEN HIBBARD BESTER - WASHINGTON CITY, D.C. MINI SURVEY SURVEYOR COMPASS A very rare and unusual but incomplete MINIATURE surveyor survey compass by OWEN HIBBARD BESTER of WASHINGTON CITY, D.C. Bester was born in Washington City in 1809 and died in 1857. Owen Bester was listed in the WASHINGTON D.C. DIRECTORY in 1857 as "a mathematical, optical and philosophical instrument maker." The tiny compass dial is a mere 2" in diameter and is engraved: "OWEN H. BESTER - WASH'N CITY, D.C." and is embellished with what appears to be a winged elongnated chestnut. Lacks compass lifter, a pair of uprights and two knurled hold-downs, and a base section to mount to a tripod or staff along with the brass mounting screws; all which a competent machinist can replicate out of brass stock.
