The eating of its own tail is thought to symbolise the cycle of birth and death as well as the duality of our own existence - quite a heavy thought! Ouroboros have been around since at least the time of the Ancient Egyptians and were then adopted by the ancient Greeks. They have been used in Gnosticism for a very long time and are thought to have magical properties which could explain how they crop up in alchemy. The tomb of Tutankhamun includes a depiction of a snake in this form and the hieroglyphics talk about the relationship of the god Ra with Osiris in the underworld. Ouroboros have been associated with alchemy since at least the third century A.D. The Gnostic view is that a snake biting its own tail represents eternity and, whilst we can't promise you eternal life when you buy this pendant we can certainly wish you a long and happy time on this planet. More recently, the psychologists Carl Jung and Erich Neumann both investigated the relationship of this snake symbol to alchemy - something you may want to think about if you like the idea of becoming more of an adept. The pendant itself measures about 40mm in diameter and the black cord of the necklace is adjustable and measures approximately 42cm plus another 4cm for adjustment.
