This brooch/pin is sure to be a conversation starter and is a must-have for any serious collector.Union Pacific Railroad employees began receiving service awards in 1969 planned as part of the Company’s celebration of the Golden Spike Centennial year. It was in recognition of the employee’s years of service or retirement. The awards were a tie tack-lapel pin for men or a brooch arrangement for women. The emblems featured a UP shield and were created from 10K yellow and white gold and were studded with full cut diamonds, rubies or emeralds depending on the amount of service represented. The original award descriptions were: 5 year award: no gem 10 year award: 1 emerald 20 year award: 1 ruby 25 year award: 2 rubies 30 year award: 3 rubies 40 year award: 1 diamond 50 year award: 2 diamonds Retirement: 3 diamondsThe awards were later changed to include sapphires, a different version of the Union Pacific Shield, and I believe this pin is 10K gold filled based on the stamp on the back. The pin is slightly bent but is still usable - see picture.
