UNGER BROS STERLING SILVER BROOCH PIN EX LOCKET LOVE’S DREAM C-CLASP c. 1900

Description: UNGER BROS STERLING SILVER BROOCH PIN EX LOCKET LOVE’S DREAM C-CLASP c. 1900 This lovely brooch started out life as a locket. The owner of the locket had a jeweler solder the sides closed and add a c-clasp to convert it to a brooch. The job was professionally done and you can see the original locket hinge mechanism and lift tab (images 8+9) and the seam where the two sides meet only if you scrutinize the edges closely. The conversion was done very early in the life of the piece because the c-clasp and especially the extended pin stem were prevalent only until approximately the late 1910’s-early 1920’s. Unger Bros placed their mark on the inside of their lockets so the UB trademark is now lost to view. The back of the piece has been engraved over. It occurs to me that probably the back had the original owner’s monogram and the piece was sold or given as a present and the new owner had the monogram obliterated. I find this all very interesting and the resulting piece is unique in the fact that it is a “puffy” brooch. Love’s Dream is one of Unger Bros’ most beloved patterns. The design is taken from mythology and features the god Cupid tenderly kissing Psyche to bring her back to life. They are surrounded by heavenly clouds as this is the moment of the actual kiss and Psyche has not yet emerged from her lifeless slumber. She presents passively, while Cupid urgently but tenderly clasps her face in his hand so that his kiss to her lips will be true.
