ORGANIZING A BOOK ON THE TOPIC OF "ADOLESCENCE," IS A FASCINATING as well as a thought provoking task. It is probable that this will always be true. The adolescent changes with his times and will be of interest to the adults of each generation who find themselves in the process of relinquishing the reins or being phased out by the next generation. It seems such a short time ago that we were the "in group,' " and the adult world was viewed as being in the archaic past. This book was planned as a textbook for those who are interested in understanding today's adolescent. It contains chapters which cover topics which are of traditional concern (such as physiological devel-opment) as well as chapters which are of current concern (such as activism and apathy in contemporary adolescents). It is probable that this book could be read with profit by any interested and concerned adult; but, it has been written, in particular, for the student who is preparing for his future role of parent, teacher, psychologist, social worker, or, responsible citizen. The book should work well as a primary text but should also prove useful as supplementary reading to the more traditional adolescent texts. I am indebted to many individuals who, over the years, have stimulated my interest in adolescence. These individuals include two professors of mine, Dr. James H. Elder and Dr. Wayne Dennis. Their enthusiasm was contagious and I hope no cure is ever discovered for this type of contagious disease. Next in line would be my three children who are now in this stage and who don't particularly like the term "adolescence." However, since they couldn't agree on a better term (I suggested "elderly children"), they have accepted the title of the book and agree that understanding would help. Certainly, I must express my appreciation to the authors of the various chapters who, as a group, were very cooperative. Without their knowledge and willingness to take the time to put their thoughts on paper, there would have been no book. If the book is found to have merit, it is primarily due to their efforts. Lastly, there have been three individuals who have been of immediate assistance: Miss Ruth E. Simpkins who worked as my research for several years as I was developing the ideas for this book; secondly, Miss Joan R. Rubin who has been most valuable with her suggestions in the final preparation of the manuscript; and lastly, Mrs. Velma T. Carter who has typed this manuscript and who has been extremely helpful.
