The crown is in steel-gray wool gabardine with scarlet band and piping, exactly the same as Soviet police hats of the 1970s-80s. Standard plastic visor of the late Soviet type. The cockade is also of the Soviet Police type, so apparently the hat was made and used before the introduction of the new Ukrainian police insignia. The side buttons however are already of the Ukrainian style, displaying the national emblem of Trident instead of the Soviet star. The sweat diamond is blank as is typically the case with the hats of late Soviet – early post-Soviet issue. There is a sewn-in silk Soviet period tag of the Kiev Headgear Factory, Ukraine. The liner is marked Size 59 (approx. US size 7 3/8 / LARGE). There is a quality control ink stamp on the reverse of the sweat band. The hat is in VERY GOOD condition. The crown is very clean and completely free of moth damage. The red band has a single small moth bite to the back, which won’t be visible when the hat is displayed on a shelf or mannequin head. There are also a few moth nips to the nap of the red piping, also not too noticeable. Other than that, the has basically shows only storage age, so it must have been worn just briefly. The gabardine exterior, interior liner, sweat diamond and sweat band are immaculately clean. The hat has held its shape perfectly over the years. A very interesting Police hat from the transitional period. Please note: the hat and its insignia are LONG OBSOLETE and cannot be used to impersonate a police officer.
