It is based in Lviv. In the early 1990s, the unit was a training center, later reorganized into a brigade. In the 1990s and 2000s, it participated in international exercises and peacekeeping missions. In the spring of 2014, it was among the first to be raised to repel Russian aggression, with units sent to the northeastern borders of Ukraine. The brigade took part in the first battle of the war in Donbas on April 13, 2014 near Semenivka, and later participated in the battles for Sloviansk. Other units of the brigade were deployed in the Luhansk region, where they fought in the area of Metalist, Heorhiivka and Lutuhyne, Luhansk airport, Novosvitlivka and Khryashchuvate. In the fall of 2014, the brigade was ambushed near Vesela Hora, and later participated in the battles for the 32nd checkpoint. In 2016, the brigade was reorganized into an airborne assault brigade and received a tank unit. Since February 24, 2022, the unit has been actively involved in repelling the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
