Description: Easy to grow tropical looking and exotic native to China. Rated Zone 7a to 11, though some report overwintering in Zone 6a successfully for years. Several times I have left tubers in the ground by mistake and almost always in my Zone 6b location, I find they survive and reemerge in the spring. Will grow well in light shade but thrives in full sun and grows much faster. In early summer, white stems emerge from tuber to produce 12" long green arrowhead shaped leaves. In mid-summer a truly bizarre 10" tall flower on a short stalk rises from the ground level to slightly above the leaves. Each inflorescence is an upright light purple or burgundy pitcher or spathe with frilly hood and a velvety black lining. From the interior emerges a black spadix. It has a memorable fragrance for about a day to lure insects for pollination. This tuber rapidly offsets, each tuber producing 2 to 8 new tubers, depending on size of tuber at end of year, creating many new plants for the next spring. In Zones 3 thru 6, dig up the tuber and offsets after the leaf dies down in the fall and store the tubers in a dry location at room temperature. If growing in a pot, give the plant better drainage by mixing 1 to 2 parts perlite with 1 part potting mix. Heavily fertilize the first couple of months. Usually, the tuber stays dormant until late June, early July. Extremely deer and varmint resistant.
