Two Sisters on the Terrace is an 1881 oil-on-canvas painting by Pierre-Auguse Renoir. The original painting dimensions are 100.5cmx81cm. The Two Sisters also known as Les Deux Soeurs. The original painting is currently collected by Art Institute of Chicago. The painting was painted on the terrace of Maison Fournaise, a restaurant on an island in the Seine in Chatou, the west of Paris. The painting shows two sisters seated outdorrs with a small basket containing balls of wool. (The Art Institute of Chicago, 2013) We can see shrubbery and foliage with the River Seine behind the railings of the terrace. Renoir's other painting Luncheon of the Boating Party was also painted in this location in 1880to 1881.The elder sister was Jeanne Darlot (1863-1914), who was 18 years old at that time. The younger sister was unknown.(The State Hermitage Museum, 2014). The art delaer Paul Durand-Ruel bought the painting for 1,500 francs in 1881. It was presented to the public in the Spring of 1882. It was known to be in the collection of Charles Ephrussi in 1883 and it was returned to the Durand-Ruel family in 1892. In 1925, Annie S. Coburn from Chicago bought the painting for 100,000. After she died in 1932, the painting was bequeathed to the Art Institute of Chicago.
