Description:   Two interesting letters from Marcel Achard to Henri Jeanson, imprisoned at the Health Two interesting letters from Marcel Achard to Henri Jeanson, imprisoned at the Health Document type : signed autograph letters Number of documents: 2 - Number of pages: 2 p. - Size: In-4 Place : Without Date : [November or December 1939] RECIPIENT : Henri Jeanson "my dear little Henri" State : Good Set of two very interesting letters from Marcel Achard, addressed to his friend Henri Jeanson then imprisoned. Arrested in November 1939 for articles published in Mars and August 1939, Jeanson was sentenced to 5 years in prison on December 20 for "provocation of soldiers to disobedience, provocation to insubordination and complicity" and imprisoned in the prison of the Health. His friends struggled to defend him. After having seen his cassation appeal rejected, these same friends circulated a petition written by Roger Martin du Gard in his favour. It was signed by Marcel Achard of course, as well as by Jean Anouilh, Marcel Aymé, Julien Benda, Henri Bernstein, Tristan Bernard, Pierre Bost, Francis Carco, Jacques Chardonne, Léon-Paul Fargue, Louis Jouvet, Joseph Kessel, Pierre Lazareff, François Mauriac, Jules Romains, etc. In these letters, Achard tells Jeanson that he will testify at his trial. “[…] Major Vimard told me – and without asking me the secret – that he had removed several counts – which is surely excellent. Lazareff told me that he was going to send Saint-Ex and I, for my part, will do what is necessary for Jouvet. My little Henri, I am very sad not to see you and not to have with you this memory, so melancholy – in addition to all the others. I learned many things while dealing with this sad affair – among other things, how much your happiness and your luck were necessary for mine […]. Listen carefully to your lawyers – and do what they tell you, I beg you [underlined 3 times]”. The second letter refers to the petition. “You can sleep peacefully. The petition is on track. I understand your nervousness. But she is without reason. Don't let yourself get upset […]”. Jouvet and Achard will take care of certain procedures and take the opportunity to collect signatures. “[…] Your letter pained me, because it proves that you are not sleeping, that you are getting angry. My poor darling, you can well imagine that it is also our only idea, ours, to obtain the political regime for you […]”. Achard reassures his friend and adds, “You don't seem to have taken into consideration the fact that the cinema commissioner is going to take care of you. He promised it to us formally. He needs you and your talent […]”. Four newspaper articles pasted on strong paper are attached, including the text written by Achard on the occasion of Jeanson's death, published in dawn. Blue ink.
