Arrested in November 1939 for articles published in Mars and August 1939, Jeanson was sentenced to 5 years in prison on December 20 for "provocation of soldiers to disobedience, provocation to insubordination and complicity" and imprisoned in the prison of the Health. His friends struggled to defend him. After having seen his cassation appeal rejected, these same friends circulated a petition written by Roger Martin du Gard in his favour. It was signed by Marcel Achard of course, as well as by Jean Anouilh, Marcel Aymé, Julien Benda, Henri Bernstein, Tristan Bernard, Pierre Bost, Francis Carco, Jacques Chardonne, Léon-Paul Fargue, Louis Jouvet, Joseph Kessel, Pierre Lazareff, François Mauriac, Jules Romains, etc. In these letters, Achard tells Jeanson that he will testify at his trial. “[…] Major Vimard told me – and without asking me the secret – that he had removed several counts – which is surely excellent.
