Description: New model for self-bonding. Does not contain paints or glue. Design work on Tupolev's first large aircraft, the twin-engine ANT-4, began before the first flight of the ANT-3. It was built on the second floor of a former Moscow merchant house that formed part of the TsAGI premises. The walls were to be dismantled and the components transported to Central Airport for assembly before the seven-minute first flight on 26 November 1925. Powered by two 336 kW Napier Lion engines, a TB-1 or Tupolev ANT-4 prototype made its maiden flight on a ski chassis on 26 November 1925. Mainly designed for the role of a heavy bomber, the ANT-4 had an all-metal construction, covered with corrugated sheet and a glazed front. The second aircraft was a real prototype of the TB-1 bomber; Originally flown in July 1928, it had a redesigned front with a "balcony" shooting cockpit and a five-man crew, including three shooters, and was powered by two 544 kW BMW VI engines. The third prototype, designated ANT-4bis, had improved engine nacelloles and increased armament. The first series machine was completed as a propaganda aircraft; named the Soviet Party (Land of Soviets), it was equipped for a staged flight through Siberia to New York, but was soon severely damaged during a forced landing. A second plane was prepared to travel using wheels or floats, respectively, and the latter Soviet Party (URSS-300) flew 2,1242 km from leaving Moscow on 23 August 1929 to arriving in New York on 1 November. In production version, as a heavy bomber TB-1, ANT-4 was armed with three pairs of DA cal machine guns. 7.62mm, placed in nose and two on back. Two hundred and sixteen were manufactured at Junkers' former concession factory in Fili near Moscow, taken over by the Soviet authorities in July 1926. Production of the TB-1 lasted until August 1932, a total of 152 units were delivered plus 66TB -1P dual jet bomber and torpedo seaplanes. The TB-1 has also been used in many experiments, including autopilot and drone trials, refueling other aircraft in flight, rocket-aided launches, and cargo parachute launches. It was the world's first twin-engine single-plane cantilever made entirely of metal.
